On April 20, two days before Earth Day 2022, IRCK joined hand in hand with Guilin Tourism University to launch a science popularization event on the campus, which also saw the participation of Karst Geology Committee and Cave Committee at Geological Society of China.

The theme of the campaign was “Protect the Earth: Pursue Harmony between Humanity and Nature”. Experts from IRCK, including senior engineer Zhang Yuanhai, and associate research fellows Huang Qibo and Shen Lina, delivered intriguing speeches on the topics “A Geological Interpretation: ‘Why Guilin Landscape is the best in China’”, “Enhance Water Resources Conservation of Lijiang River and Protectthe Guilin Landscape”, and “Sustainable Utilization of the Karst Resources in Guilin Under Research-University Cooperation Approach” respectively.More than 400 faculties and students attended the event. Citing an article in the Chinese textbook for the fourth grade, Zhang Yuanhai gave a presentation on “A Geological Interpretation: ‘Why Guilin Landscape is the best in China’”, in which he explained in detail from a geological perspective the importance of the landscape to the world and the existing challenges facing its protection. Huang Qibo centered on the topic “Enhance Water Resources Conservation of Lijiang River and Protectthe Guilin Landscape”. Noting that the landscape was listed as a World Heritage Site, Huang analyzed the use of water resources in Guilin and the arising challenges, and put forward responsive measures and proposals in terms ofpromoting water conservation, strengthening groundwater resources development, enhancing sewage treatment capacities, and controlling water pollution. ShenLina lectured on “Sustainable Utilization of the Karst Resources in Guilin under Research-University Cooperation Approach”. Shen, along with other team members, designed research-university curriculums on karst landscapesand carried out field activities by making a case study on the Crown Cave in Guilin, in the hopes of helping build Guilin into a world-class tourism city with top-notch karst research and world natural sites protection practices.

As part of the science popularization activities for the 53rdEarth Day, the event was widely welcomed by the faculties and students at Guilin Tourism University. Looking forward, IRCK will continue to bring more science popularization activities on campus to help expose more students and faculties to earth sciences and translate the knowledge into actions to protectnatural landscapes in China.
